#Reflect Campus Missions - God's Great Power in Small Groups

Mar 24, 2021

Hello friends, family, and prayer partners,

Conner here with an update on our ministry!

Our campus ministry isn’t a big one. We don’t focus on lots of big “attraction” events to get as many people in the door as we can, rather we try to focus on a few. What does that mean? Jesus' public ministry only lasted about 3 years, and he focused on 12 people - even losing one of them in the end, but with God’s help, that small group changed the rest of the world. Our focus at BHC is to take the time to intentionally invest in a handful of lives at UD. We hope and pray that they will then do the same as they move on from university and into the rest of the world.

So what does intentionally investing in people look like? We have our weekly large group gathering called Dinner and Discussion where we meet as a collective group and serve any students and guests dinner. Casey or I will lead a brief Bible lesson, and then we break into groups of 8 or smaller to discuss the lesson. Casey and I each have groups of students we meet with for weekly Bible studies, and we regularly go prayer walking on campus.

Sometimes investing in our students means simply joining their walk in life, building organic friendships, and letting God take care of the rest. I’ve helped students move apartments, taken them to Philadelphia to see family, invited them over for dinner, met up to watch the new episode of the Mandalorian, and so much more. We look for opportunities all the time to build up our relationships. We’ve seen serious fruit from this too!

Hsuan Hua (pronounced Shen Hoo-Ah) is easily one of my favorite students. Yes - I do have favorites... She is a quiet and reserved student from Taiwan. I originally met her through a colleague and invited her to a Dinner and Discussion night. Conversation was easy some nights and awkward others, but she kept coming back. Towards the end of the last semester, I asked her if she would be interested in joining in a Bible study with a couple of Chinese students, and she agreed. We met weekly for the last 3 weeks of the fall semester and began our study. She asks wonderful questions and isn’t afraid to speak her mind when she reads something that seems off to her. Right before Christmas break, I asked her what made her keep coming back and she told me that she just needed to practice her English and that she really wasn’t interested in anything that we talked about...ooof.
BUT WAIT! THERE’S MORE! When the spring semester got underway I was trying to plan a time to ask her if she would like to continue the Bible study, but before I ever had a chance to ask her she came to me and asked me with excitement if we could start it back up again! We’ve continued our study this semester but she’s doing it for different reasons now. She’s interested in what we’re reading, and her relationship with us at BHC is getting stronger and stronger. I am thrilled with where she’s at and so excited to see what God shows her next!

Prayer Requests:

  • Pray for God's blessing on our ministry, that He would send us more students, and the wisdom to minister to them
  • Please pray for Hsuan Hua and our other students, that they would continue to see God more clearly
  • And lastly, Please pray for me as I continue to serve and to discern God's will for my life and mission
